It’s been eight months since the first case of the novel coronavirus was reported in Wuhan. Since then, it has been a downward spiral for most if not everyone, as the world tried to grapple with the economic impact of the contagious virus. Now, after a long time, the global economy is slowly reopening, and if you’re a business owner, there’s no doubt you’re eager to bounce back.
However, things cannot go back to business as usual. Measures need to implemented to facilitate service delivery without compromising public health and confidence. That’s why we curated a reopening checklist for business owners and human resource managers during covid-19.
- Determine if it’s Safe to Reopen
Some areas have high Covid-19 infections than others. Before you put up the “Open Now” placard, make sure you evaluate the infection rate in your entity’s location. If your business is situated in the epicenter of the covid-19 virus, it would be wise to reconsider reopening until a later date.
If you decide to go on and resume, then you need to implement incredibly strict measures to keep both your employees and clients safe. For instance, have a highly responsive crisis management team in place, and a proactive leadership team to address any unexpected turn of events. If your business’s setting is in an area with relatively low infection rates, you have to ensure your reopening doesn’t cause a surge in these cases by implementing protective and preventive measures.
- Implement Business Premise Settings that Facilitate Social Distancing
As mentioned, things cannot go back to normal. Covid-19 is the new normal until stated otherwise. High infection rates or not, you have to ensure your business premise automatically facilitates social distancing.
For instance, eliminate shared workstations, and ensure the new workstations are at least six feet apart. If your business operations involve employees coming into contact with the clients a lot, find ways to establish barriers, and to reduce the contact while at the same time ensuring efficient service delivery.
- Invest in Sanitizing Equipment
Now, this is a no-brainer. Ensure you set up sanitizing stations at all premise entry and exit points. If your enterprise has a lot of shared equipment, for instance, photocopy and printing machines, set up a sanitizing station, and ensure you train employees on how to clean them after each use.
This is particularly important as the Corona Virus has been proven to survive on such surfaces for quite a long time. You could even have a task force team to enforce such regulations.
- Do Whatever You Can to Flatten the Curve
We’ve all been witnesses to what Covid-19 can do. It’s our responsibility to flatten the curve if things are to resume normalcy. Do whatever you can as a business owner, or a human resource manager to reduce the infection rate.
If your entity’s resources can, then allow remote working. If not, find ways to minimize contact. For instance, if your business premise is small, consider having your employees work in shifts. Also create different entry and exit points, to facilitate one-way foot traffic.

Implementing the measures above will go a long way in facilitating the success of your business amidst the Corona Virus Pandemic. However, remember Covid-19 regulations vary from state to state. Whatever measures you implement, you must stay abreast of the national, local, and industry-specific regulations regarding business-reopening during the pandemic.
